Made in England

The world’s oldest public electrical clock at Greenwich, England.

There’s something inherently sad with the world’s once-proud industrial powers being reduced to using “Made in _______” as a marketing catchphrase, yet we’ve undoubtedly reached that point. In the cases of the U.S. or England it’s even odder that the few goods still made in those countries, invariably items of clothing, are valued more abroad then by their own populaces (see: Japan)

Samsung | Ad Fail

I don’t know who Brett Fahlgren is - he’s probably a very nice guy and he runs a “style” blog, which, like most other style blogs, features stories about electronic meat thermometers. Samsung has tagged him along with another fellow to blog at their Wonder Exchange…god help me…about things us men are interested in. Things like baseball and meat and baseball meat.

All of this is fine, if a little archaic. I’d never heard of the Wonder Exchange or its blog before seeing them in GQ, and for the life of me I don’t see why I should care if either Brett or Hubert or Kerrin are going to obviously lie about how vital a Samsung Netbook 1000 XLT Bravado Lite is to their blogs. Brett uses a Macbook Air or I’m a jelly donut.

What gets me is how transparent a grab this is, and how poorly it’s being executed. I can just see the people at Samsung saying to each other, “Hey, men like style now AND they like gadgets and I think some of them read, so let’s get some elite bloggers to pretend they use our stuff. How can that possibly fail?”

And then Brett comes along with his advice about these new-fangled desert boots and the importance of signature watches and I just want to punch him in his lying face. His smug, non-Samsung using face.

Trying to sell me a computer because a blogger uses it is like trying to sell me a car that Lance Armstrong drives. Blogging is the least technologically taxing undertaking that still uses a computer. It’s about as difficult as sending an email with a phone. Apparently Brett is about to launch a line of ties - I wish him all the success in the world. Hopefully they will be so successful he doesn’t have to shill for a totally tone-deaf tech company.
